Eric - thanks for your comment. I think for me the struggle comes from the fact that always, the student should be our focus - why does technology distract us so? I hope that as we continue to educate colleagues about technology, this comes to be less of an issue.

Kristen, I'm not sure if Student Affairs (the profession), has ever really been that good at creating student-oriented websites. It's not part of our wheelhouse. We value face-to-face so much that most SA sites still look like something from 1997. That's why I often try to highlight the "good ones" on my IHE blog. However, those sites are rare. I'm so stoked that you're pushing things forward at your school as well as at the profession level. Cheers!

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one struggling with this. Right now I keep most of my professional networking/activities on LinkedIn and Twitter and focus family/friend connections on Facebook. I find it hard to strike a balance.

My husband loves Walking Dead and I love Downton - so the last couple of Sunday's I've won the tv - he DVRs - 'cause I live Tweet and he doesn't. Now that it's over...he gets his Sunday nights back! He'll love the graphic up top by the way.

Thankfully everything on my twitter feed was just general shock and awe but did not specifically say what happened. A friend ruined it for me in person and I have to admit I am thankful. That ending was enough to put someone in counseling so at least having a heads up made it a bit more bearable. I think we should all wear black in mourning until the new season!

In general I have found myself checking twitter less the more comfortable people become with "live tweeting" or posting spoilers. I try not to post such things, but also understand that some of what I chose to read is my responsibility as much as what I tweet.

I don't carry my 'big bag' every day. But when I do:
The bag I purchased at TJ Maxx for $20. I had my eye on this stunning kelly green bag, but I'm cheap and didn't want to pay the $40. But I like this bag. It has some whimsy.
Inside: Dell Inspiron, soon to be replaced by an Asus Transformer so Dell can be a stay at home guy.
Levinger notebook with random notes. File folders with papers that will be scanned when I'm able to archive them.
Ear phones
Business cards
and of course random notecards because you never know when you are going to need to thank someone, give them a pick-me-up, or have an "I need something cute!" moment

Thanks! I love the small a lot. As I mentioned in the post, I also have a medium, but it's just too big, thus inviting disorganization, chaos, and sore backs (because I feel tempted to fill it). Highly recommend the small as big enough for everything I need to haul around, but small enough to be manageable. And these bags are rock-solid.

Might be time to get back into using my Timbuk2 (a medium, which invites a lot of extra craziness, perhaps it's time to consider a small).

Since you are not a follower of the tour I thought I'd let you know (& b/c it's kind of an awesome coincidence that I'm betting you will appreciate) that the white w/red polka dots (the maillot à pois rouges) is the jersey worn by the rider who is the current king of the mountains (the best climber by points in the mountain stages.) Much like the overall leader by points wears the yellow jersey. The "King of the Mountains" generally one of the toughest riders on the tour and respected as such.

Yikes. Sorry you had to make the sacrifice! I have heard from others that the watch Downton because they know they can watch the replay of Walking Dead at so many other times! Tough choices!
